Transition programs play an important role when students change year levels, as well as when new students enrol at our school.
All children enrolling at our school will be involved in a transition program according to their age and year level. The purpose of the transition program is for students to start at William Ruthven Primary School with minimum disruption and maximum support. The Principal determines which class the student will be allocated based on the number of vacancies, student needs, gender balance, and academic, social and emotional needs.
Each year teacher's use their professional knowledge of how students work best by creating student generated friendship groups which consider such things as gender, equity, special needs and academic balance. Teachers at William Ruthven support students with a 'within school' transition program in term 4 each year - and provide the following year's teacher/s with a substantial handover to ensure all students continue to be happy and successful.
The Department has developed guidance to help primary and secondary schools to support an effective transition to secondary school for Year 6 students moving to secondary school in 2022. Please refer to Supporting a positive start to secondary school in 2022 (DOCX)
